It’s Thanksgiving and Americans are celebrating with family and friends. But after Thanksgiving, a lot of people realize that they are left with some very tough stains on their clothes.
“Thanksgiving is lovely, but it can prove dangerous for our clothes because of the Thanksgiving meal”, says Leigh Murphy, scientist at Novozymes.
Leigh Murphy knows what he is talking about. Being a scientist, he works to develop enzymes for use in laundry detergents, where they help to remove stains. Each year, he examines thousands of different stains.
“The toughest Thanksgiving stains are gravy, cranberry and pumpkin. But luckily, good washing advise and having a stain removal system in place, will help to get clothes fully clean”, Leigh Murphy says.
To get a better sense on what really matters when Americans do the laundry, the YouGov Analysis Institute polled more than 1,000 respondents.
The survey found that stains are still the main pain. 52% of the respondents stated that stains are the most important factor when doing the laundry. Basically, people just want to get that stain out immediately. In fact, nearly half of US moms will wash a blouse three or more times to get a stain out.
Here are the top 3 Thanksgiving stains and how to remove them
- Gravy: Rub a small amount of liquid dishwashing soap into the fabric. Rinse and pretreat the stain with a laundry stain remover – launder.
- Cranberry: Flush the stained area with cool water, make a solution of half a teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent, mixed with a tablespoon of white vinegar, and a quart of cool water. Let the stained fabric soak in this solution for about 15 minutes. Rinse and launder.
- Pumpkin: Remove any excess pumpkin pulp, and run the fabric, inside out, under the cold water to flush out as much of the stain as possible. Pretreat the stain with a laundry stain remover. Launder.
