Each year over 150 living history re-enactors come together on the Friday and Saturday closest to the Battle of New Orleans, January 8, to commemorate America’s victory over the British in this final major battle of the War of 1812. Events are held at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park – Chalmette Battlefield and include demonstrations such as cannon and musket firing and campfire cooking. One of the most amazing things about the Battle of New Orleans is the amount of different people and military groups from different races, social classes, languages, and backgrounds who came together to protect their country and their way of life. This is easily seen throughout the encampments set up at the Battlefield during the Commemoration. The majority of the events take place during the day from 9:30am-4:30pm with special events on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night is a re-enactment of one of the skirmishes leading up to the Battle.
