Cabrini junior earns Jose Luis Baños Award for excellence in Spanish

Cabrini High School’s Evelyn Enrique received the 2017 Jose Luis Baños Award for Excellence in Spanish on Sunday, April 23.

Enrique, a Spanish AP student, received her award during a reception at the Academy of the Sacred Heart for outstanding achievement in her Spanish studies while attending Cabrini. She was one of 11 students to receive the award representing 11 different high schools in New Orleans, each chosen for their high standards of excellence in language study.

The Sociedad Española is dedicated to the celebration of the traditions, respect for the art, music and literature, and promulgation of the Spanish language and culture in New Orleans.

Vivian Coutin, Cabrini’s Assistant Principal and President of Sociedad Española, opened the presentation by addressing the assembly on the importance of Spanish in the 21st century. Coutin was followed by Ramon Vallejo, a member of the Board of Trustees of Sociedad Española, who spoke about the Camino a Santiago.

The Honorable Jose Luis Baños presented the students with the award that honors his father, the founding member of Sociedad Española. He also presented Coutin with a certificate for her valuable assistance in promoting the language and culture of Spain.
