Fire Engineer Stephen Dysart started his career with the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department in December of 2011. He attended the LSU Fire Academy, graduating after 12 weeks with National certifications in Firefighting and Hazardous Materials Operations. He is also certified nationally as an Emergency Medical Responder, Fire Service Instructor I and Fire Officer I. Engineer Dysart served in the United States Marine Corps and Reserves from 2008 through 2016. Not only does he serve his community, but also his country. He was deployed in Afghanistan for one tour of duty while on military leave with the Department that lasted one year. He was promoted to Fire Engineer January 23, 2017 after passing the State’s written examination. He is the Engineer on Engine 8 on the Second Platoon. He maintains his Engine and Equipment in tip top condition and ready to respond to any emergency. Stephen is a very dedicated firefighter and works as an Acting Captain whenever needed.

On March 2nd of this year, Engineer Dysart was working as the Captain on Engine 8 when they responded to a medical incident on Robert Drive. A Citizen came to his Fire Station and asked for assistance getting his wife, from their vehicle into their house. She was just released from the hospital and was too weak to get into their home. When Engine 8 arrived on scene, Acting Captain Dysart called for additional assistance from nearby Rescue Squad 2, to help the patient into the home. During this assistance he assessed the patient and felt she was in poor condition. He then requested EMS to respond to the scene. The resident was put at ease with the situation due in part to Engineer Dysart’s compassion and professionalism until EMS arrived. The patient was evaluated further by EMS, where they saw the need for her to return to the hospital. Engine 8 assisted further until the special patient was transported back to the hospital. This is just one example of the many medical emergencies that he responds to and the great bedside manner he has when dealing with our citizens.

Engineer Dysart is a Graduate of Lee’s Summit West High School in Lee’s Summit Missouri (and we won’t hold that against him). Stephen is the proud parent of one son, Luke Eugene.

It is a great honor and makes us extremely proud to present to the Kiwanis Club, Engineer Stephen Dysart, the Fire Department’s “Life Saver of the Quarter.”
