Nunez Community College to begin baseball program in 2017

College Makes its First Foray into Intercollegiate Athletics

Nunez Community College will be starting a baseball program later this year. A group of Nunez students organized a baseball club during the fall 2016 semester, and the College plans to transition this into its first intercollegiate athletic team in 2017. Nunez’s team will pursue membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and compete with teams from community and junior colleges across Louisiana and Mississippi in NJCAA Region 23. This announcement follows a recent vote by the student body at Nunez to support the addition of a student activities fee.

“We are excited to be able to provide an opportunity for potential student-athletes from all the parishes that we serve to play baseball at the collegiate level. What is especially exciting about this team is that starting it has been a student-led initiative,” said Dean of Student Affairs at Nunez, Becky Maillet.

According to Maillet, a group of about a dozen students approached her prior to the start of the fall 2016 semester about starting a baseball program at Nunez. These students had played the sport competitively at high schools in St. Bernard, Plaquemines, and St. Tammany Parishes and wanted to continue their baseball careers beyond high school. Maillet advised them to establish the team as a club, and from there she and Chancellor Tommy Warner have assisted the students with the process of starting an intercollegiate team.

Glenn Powell will serve as head coach, with Tommy Stone Jr. filling the role of assistant coach.

“I am very appreciative to have this opportunity to be the coach of the new Nunez baseball team. I am looking forward to all the positive things that this athletic program will bring to this great college and its community,” said Powell.

Students who are interested in information about the team or try-outs should contact the team at baseball@nunez.edu or (504) 278-6467.

Information about individual and corporate sponsorships for the new baseball team is forthcoming. At this time, the College is fielding inquiries from prospective sponsors. For information about sponsorships, contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at Nunez Community College via email atpr@nunez.edu or call (504) 278-6421.

“We are confident that our community of current and prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni, and area leaders will come together to support this team and our College’s efforts to get it going,” said Chancellor Warner.
