Construction started on 2017 St. Bernard Parish Library Summer Reading Program

Now that school is out are you looking for something constructive to do with your kids? Are you searching for activities that won’t pound your budget into the ground? The St. Bernard Parish Library’s 2017 Build a Better World summer reading program has just what you are looking for. This annual event promotes recreational reading and offers lots of free programming. Weekly story craft sessions, special guests and artistic performances are all on the punch-list during the six-week program. For a limited time, registrants will receive Super Summer Reader Yard Signs, Build a Better World tote bags, and free Chalmette Movie passes for the 30th anniversary of the Chipmunk Adventure. All participants will receive an activity sheet, official bookmark and calendar of events.

Programming begins Tuesday, June 6th at 1 p.m. with the ‘It Starts at Home’ story craft program which includes books, storytelling, poetry and a craft. This free hour-long program will be repeated on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and again on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Adding to the excitement is a visit with Ronald McDonald on Thursday, June 8th at 11:30 a.m. Rounding out the first week of activities will be Harvey Rabbit and friends who will perform at the library on Friday at 3 p.m. as part of the library’s popular Fridays with the Arts series. Harvey Rabbit’s visit is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, and as administered by St. Tammany Parish. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works, a donation by Arlette and Wayne Nunez, Shell Oil’s Matching Funds Program and the Lemonade Day Kids of St. Bernard.

Additional support of the library’s annual reading program comes from local community heroes. Those sponsors include: Audubon Institute, Chalmette Movies, Crave Bar and Grill, J & M Jewelers, Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours, Kiwanis of St. Bernard-Arabi, Louisiana Children’s Museum, McDonalds of St. Bernard, National World War II Museum, New Orleans Paddlewheels, P.J.’s Coffee of St. Bernard, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Wow’s Cafe’ & Wingery.
