St. Bernard Parish Library’s fourth week of fun

Bill Damon

The sky scraper’s the limit when we start thinking about our fourth week of programming at the St. Bernard Parish Library. Participants are invited to attend the ‘If You Can Dream It’ story craft programs set for Tuesday, June 27th at 1:00 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Books, poems, fun and crafts are on the agenda for these free one-hour programs. All materials are provided and readers of all ages are invited to attend.

We just keep on piling on the fun throughout the rest of the week. On Thursday, June 29th at 11:30 a.m. St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. deputies will visit the library. Summer readers will get to meet the deputies, learn safety tips and see Daren the D.A.R.E. lion. This is a wonderful opportunity for area youth to interact with our local law enforcement officers and to learn what they do for our community.

No hard hats will be required when Bill Damon, an award winning balloon artist, makes his first appearance at the St. Bernard Parish Library as part of its Fridays with Arts series on June 30th at 3:00 p.m. Damon is a world class magician and balloon artisan who is a featured special events performer at venues such as Walt Disney World Resorts, the Nickelodeon Hotel, and Universal Studios. Billy is sure to get things popping when he starts his show off with a bit of magic — balloon magic that is. He will get the audience involved with a retelling of the classic story of the Three Little Pigs complete with curly pig tails, balloon houses and a big, bad wolf hat. Everything is made out of balloons, of course. Damon’s free hour-long program has been made possible by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, and as administered by St. Tammany Parish. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works and donations by Arlette and Wayne Nunez with Shell Oil’s Matching Funds Program as well as the Lemonade Day Kids of St. Bernard.

Readers are also encouraged to continue construction of their activity/game sheets. The deadline to turn in completed sheets and to be entered into the prize drawings is Thursday, July 13th for pre-Readers through 12th graders. The Grand Finale prize drawing is set for Friday, July 14th at 3:00 p.m. for pre-Readers through 5th graders and the Teens and Tweens prize drawing will take place on Saturday, July 15th at 11:30 a.m. Adult readers have until, Saturday, July 29th to complete their bingo games to be eligible for their prize drawing set for Tuesday, August 1st. Readers who are unable to attend the prize drawings or who finish late have until August 1st to receive their rewards.
