Arlene Meraux Elementary learns about the Westward Expansion

The second-grade students at Arlene Meraux Elementary learned about the Westward Expansion. Sophia is showing the quilt they made to go along with our unit. The students had to draw a picture and write four things they learned about in that lesson. They learned about steamboats, the Erie Canal, Sequoyah and his written language, the Trail of Tears, the Pony Express, the Transcontinental Railroad, and the Lakota Tribe. The students also learned about the history through a timeline and stories. They learned about where the first colonies began, about the Declaration of Independence, Lewis and Clark expedition, the invention of the steamboats, Sequoyah’s written language, the Erie Canal, the Trail of Tears, the Transcontinental Railroad, and the Lakota Tribe. Students had to make their own timelines of their lives starting at birth. The students enjoyed doing this project and presenting it to their classmates. All of the 2nd grade worked hard and learned so much about the Westward Expansion.
