First Baptist Church in Verret receives a Historical Marker

Rev. Raymond Smith and five generations of his family members attended the unveiling of a Historical Marker to honor Rev. Samuel Smith who organized and became the Pastor of First Baptist Church in Verret in 1871. Rev. Samuel Smith was born into slavery in 1843 and worked on a sugar mill nearby. After New Orleans was captured in 1862, he ran away and joined the 2nd Louisiana Calvary (Union). After the civil war, he founded this church and was elected to the police jury, the school board, and Justice of the Peace.
