Chalmette High School’s varied, rich academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs were on full display at the recent Recruiting and Scheduling Orientation Program when over 600 middle school students from across the school district gathered at the high school’s Cultural Arts Center to hear from administrators, teachers, and current students.
Principal Wayne Warner welcomed the future Owls, reminding the students that their futures begin today.
“The choices you make over the next four years will lay the foundation for the rest of your life,” Warner said. “Chalmette High School has something for everyone – from ROTC to robotics, from athletics to the arts, I guarantee that you will find your passion while you are with us.”
Warner told the students that putting on a CHS uniform comes with responsibility – as each student not only represent themselves and the middle school they came from, but also the generations of Owls who preceded them.
“To be an Owl is to take pride in our strong and vibrant legacy. We have a long-standing tradition of excellence, and we expect our future Owls to continue that tradition for the years to come,” Warner said.
Academic achievement has been a hallmark at CHS for decades. In fact, the high school has ranked as an “A” school according to the Louisiana Department of Education for several years.
Assistant Principal Kelli Watson explained the academic opportunities available to all.
“In 2017, Chalmette High graduates earned over $12 million in college scholarships and more than 50% of CHS students graduated with college credit through Dual Enrollment and Advance Placement courses,” she said.
“The school offers 7 AP courses and 6 dual enrollment courses helping ensure that students have the opportunity to take college-level work while they are still in high school. Not only do we offer more AP and dual enrollment courses than most high schools in the state, our students do better than most high schools in the state,” she continued.
“Last year, the AP performance growth for the number of testers scoring 3 or higher placed the school in the top 10 in the state.”
But student achievement is not limited to the classroom. CHS offers 17 sports programs – many of which have earned District Championship titles – award-winning performing arts groups including CHS Voices, Charmers, Contemporary Dance, and the band programs which recently received a Superior Rating by the Louisiana Music Educators Association.
Students can also participate in any of the over three dozen clubs that are available at the school.
Superintendent Doris Voitier said having a school the size of CHS gives administrators the ability to make sure every child can thrive.
“With a bigger school, we can offer so much more for our students. Whether our students have their eyes’ set on a four-year university or to a high-wage, high-demand job, CHS has a pathway for you.”
