Academic Games Team Takes Home National Awards

The National Academic Games team was recently recognized by the St. Bernard Parish School Board for their outstanding achievements at the recent National Tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee.

St. Bernard Parish’s Academic Games Team traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee recently, joining over 2,000 students from across the country to compete in this elite, national tournament.

Academic Games, a series of academic competitions where students are challenged to use higher order thinking skills, focuses on language arts, English, history, and mathematics.

Superintendent Doris Voitier, a former player and coach, said this activity is near and dear to her heart.

“We are so proud of our students for their achievements,” she said. “Each year at the national tournament, we get nothing but accolades about our students’ behavior, their character, their integrity, and their sportsmanship. All of which proves once again, St. Bernard Parish students are second to none.”

The team members earned various awards, including a National Runner-Up Team Award in Presidents. Other noteworthy accomplishments included:

Elementary Division: 4th Place Team Onsets, Selina Li perfect score on Onsets, 5th Place Team Presidents

Middle Division: 2nd Place Team Equations, Anthony Wei 3rd Place Equations

Junior Division: Nicholas Maag 10th Place

Senior Division: 2nd Place Team Presidents, Kelsey Billiot 8th Place, Emily Vu 9th Place, Leanne Dacula 10th Place Propaganda

This year team was accompanied by coaches, Melinda Hall, Gena Asevado, Jillian Chrisman, Isabel Gonzalez and Ryan Gregorie.

Assistant Superintendent Mary Lumetta presented these outstanding scholars to the School Board at a recent meeting.

“Once again the players represented our district, their parents, and themselves extremely well. Not only are these students great competitors, more importantly they are great people and great
teammates,” she said.
