Strike Up The Band At The St. Bernard Parish Library

[L] Calliope Puppets, [R] Harvey Rabbit and Friends.

Summer reading hits the top of the charts at the St. Bernard Parish Library with the start of the 2018 Libraries Rock summer reading program. The six-week annual event begins with a drumroll on June 4th with a Fun Fair Open House presented by one of the library’s most long-standing and generous sponsors, McDonald’s of St. Bernard. Families are invited to visit the library between 10 a.m. and noon for games, face painting, photos, prizes, coloring sheets, cookies, and fun.

We will keep the music going on with the ‘Libraries Rock’ story craft program on Tuesday, June 5th at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 6th at 11 a.m. Listeners will hear
stories celebrating books, reading and libraries. Mr. Zane Spitnale of Spitnale’s Superior Martial Arts Academy will have library goers moving and grooving with a free martial arts demonstration on Thursday, June 7th at 11:30 a.m. And there’s more! It would not be summer reading unless Harvey Rabbit comes to the library. Harvey, along with Mr. Tim and Ms. Laura, will have their boogie shoes on and will be ready to dance up a storm on Friday, June 7th at 3 p.m. and rounding out an extremely full playlist will be Karen Konnerth of Calliope Puppets. She will present ‘Calliope Kate’ on Saturday, June 8th at 11 a.m. The Harvey Rabbit and Friends show and the performance by Calliope Puppets are part of the library’s Summer with the Arts series which is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs and donations by Arlette and Wayne Nunez with matching funds from Shell Oil’s Gift Program. All events at the library are free and open to the public. Groups are asked to call ahead to register.

While readers are just getting warmed up by attending lots of fun programs they are reminded to sign up to read for prizes by registering to receive their musical activity sheets, official summer reading bookmarks, and event calendars. The first 100 families to register will receive a Super Summer Reader yard sign and the first 200 Pre-Readers through 5th graders will receive a Rock Star Rubber Ducky figure. Pre-Readers through 5th graders will also receive a Cane’s Bookmark that allows them to read to earn a free Cane’s kids combo. Everyone registering between May 30th and June 13th will also receive a free movie pass to see the 25th-anniversary showing of the Sandlot, compliments of Chalmette Movies.
