Making Music at the St. Bernard Parish Library

Lady Chops, Week 4

And the beat goes on…the beat goes on. Grab your boogie shoes and dance on over to the St. Bernard Parish Library, located at 2600 Palmisano Blvd. in Chalmette, for lots of summer reading fun. You don’t need to worry about anyone stepping on your blue suede shoes for the library’s ‘Two Left Feet’ story craft program set for Tuesday, June 26th at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 27th at 11 a.m. Listeners will hear stories and poems about dancing during the free one-hour story program. All craft materials will be provided.

The next entry on the library’s dance card is a Musical Instrument ‘Meet and Greet’. Lynn Oaks Band Director and jazz guitarist, Ed Barrett will bring a variety of musical instruments to the library for summer readers to see and hear. This free program is scheduled for Thursday, June 28th at 11:30 a.m.

No one will be a wallflower when Elizabeth Vidos a.k.a. ‘Lady Chops’ visits the library on Friday, June 29th as part of the library’s ongoing Summer with the Arts series. Her ‘Drum Roll Please’ show will have fingers snapping, toes tapping and hands clapping during this free hour-long percussion performance set to start at 3 p.m.

The library’s programming is like the song that never ends. It just goes on and on for our library friends. We will be singing a different tune during our 5th week of activities starting with our ‘Music to Whose Ears?’ story craft program set for Tuesday, July 3rd at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. We will take a one day intermission in our programming when the library closes for the July 4th holiday, but will be ready to Cool Down with Cane’s and a Craft on Thursday, July 5th at 11 a.m. Summer readers will make a take-home fan and sip on some delicious Cane’s lemonade or iced tea, compliments of our sponsor, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers.

The library’s Summer with the Arts series will raise the curtains on Frank Levy’s Stories in Motion when he presents his interactive theatrical program on Friday, July 6th at 3 p.m. Audience members will help to tell the tale of the antics of two rascally characters—Br’er Rabbit and Anansi with props, costumes and sound effects. Founder of Casa Samba, Brazilian musician and, Pandeiro master, Curtis Pierre will bring the summer arts series to a close when he performs on Saturday, July 7th at 11 a.m. Audience members will join Curtis in a jam session as he introduces library friends of all ages to a variety of musical instruments from Brazil and Africa. In addition to the opportunity to be members of the band, participants will get to see another aspect of a Brazilian Carnival when stilt walkers take center stage.

Funding for all of the library’s Summer with the Arts performances has been provided by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs and donations by Arlette and Wayne Nunez with matching funds from Shell Oil’s Gift Program.
