Sipping and Sweetness in Old Arabi

While parents, students, and teachers have been getting back to school, the Old Arabi Neighborhood Association has also been busy planning its fall season, with a pair of events at the Aycock Barn to kick things off.

First up is the return of OANA’s popular Sippin’ in the Sunset, taking place on Thursday, September 20 from 6-9pm. Guests are invited to enjoy the music of The Cypress Pop Trio, along with the great local food, wine, beer & seasonal sangria that will be part of the fun. Artists and crafters will also be on hand, showcasing a wide array of talent and shopping options. The St. Bernard Social Ride is expected to make an appearance that evening, as well as dozens of teachers who will enjoy sipping and mixing with other faculty as part of the event.

OANA will also be celebrating Sugar Fest X on Saturday, October 13 from 1-9 pm. One of the few events offering free narrated tours of this historic and cultural arts district, the Sugar Fest also features a dessert baking competition and a donut eating contest for adults and kids. A Kids’ Activity Tent, college football on tv, and live music throughout the day will be part of this sweet time in Old Arabi.

Featured performers for the day include Christian Serpas & Ghost Town, Roux the Day, and 90 Degrees West. Domino Sugar, one of the major sponsors of the festival, will also host its annual sugar giveaways.

This year’s Sugar Fest sponsors will also be invited to the Sugar Soiree, the 10th anniversary Patron Party happening on 10.10.

Businesses or people interested in sponsorship opportunities or in being a craft or food vendor for either event should visit www.oldarabi.org for details.

OANA President Barry Lemoine said the organization looks forward to these two events — good times for good causes, as proceeds help the group’s beautification efforts as well as families in need.

“Sippin’ continues to be a premier event in our community,” Lemoine said. “Arabi is one of the fastest growing communities in the country and we are happy to showcase all that is good in our neighborhood. We are also really excited to celebrate all the sweetness at Sugar Fest X.”
