Letter to the Editor

As we celebrate Independence Day, we should reflect on the meaning of the document which begins with the words:

“When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another…”

Perhaps it’s time that the people of St. Bernard think about our local government as we read those words. Is It now a government that is living up to those ‘self-evident truths” or has It has become a government of political patronage? Our founders were rightly fearful of a bloated big government. Their views asserted that less government was better and more efficient. Have our local leaders forgotten this? 

Our Declaration listed the various abuses by the government of Great Britain. Then, as now, opposing views are ignored. Our founders declared the under those circumstances, they were impelled ‘to separation” (to get rid of those leaders). 

We should ask for “Divine Providence” as we vote in coming elections to have leaders that are receptive to the needs of all citizens in our Great Parish, not just the politically connected.
