Virginia McElroy passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at the age of 80. Beloved wife of Curtis McElroy for 63 years. Loving mother of Joy Lynn Hertz, Patty Gonzales (Alfred), Terry Comeaux (John Perry), Cathy Manale (Ted) and Bonny Kerne (Errol). Daughter of the late Bert and Margaret Hanslip Vanderheyden. Sister of Dolly McPherren, Bonnie Gros and the late Lynn Vanderheyden. Proud grandmother of Kirk, Michelle, Alfred, Ginger, Scott, Nicole, Ryan, Perry Jr., Stephanie, Heidi, Ronnie, Theo, Falyn, Donald, Chavonne, Amanda, Errol Jr., Joshua and the late Joshua. Also survived by 41 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was born on August 2, 1936 in Gillette, Wyoming. She was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish and a current resident of Picayune, MS. She was the President of the St. Mark’s Catholic School Board and PTA in Chalmette, LA and President of the New Orleans Archdiocese CCD. Virginia also served as President and Vice President of the St. Bernard Genealogy Society. She was a genealogist & avid reader and never forgot a face or name. Virginia will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. A funeral mass will begin at noon. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
