St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis marked the 202nd anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans by participating in a number of commemorative events held in St. Bernard and New Orleans this past weekend.

“The Battle of New Orleans is special to the people of our community as one of the most important military engagements in American history took place in St. Bernard,” said McInnis.

The parish president spoke at the British Memorial scheduled for the De La Ronde Plantation Historic Site on Friday, January 6th. Also speaking at the event were representatives of the Daughters of the British Empire and a senior official from the United Kingdom’s General Consulate Houston office.

McInnis also took part in a number of ceremonies on the actual anniversary of the battle, including at the Chalmette Battlefield, Jackson Square, and at the Ursuline Convent, where Archbishop Gregory Aymond celebrated the annual thanksgiving Mass before the statue of Our Lady of Prompt Succor.
