Crotwell named Kiwanis Life Saver of the Quarter

Captain Eric Crotwell receiving his award and gifts from Kiwanis President Sammie Catalanotto.

Captain Eric Crotwell began his career with the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department as a Fire Recruit September 25, 2001. He attended the LSU Fire Academy for 10 weeks, coming out nationally certified as a Firefighter II. He was promoted to Fire Captain April 1, 2013. 2018 will be his 17th year of delivering outstanding service to our community.

As a Company Officer, he is assigned to the First Platoon on Engine Company #3. This is the busiest fire company in St. Bernard Parish, having responded to 1193 emergencies in 2017.

On April 1, 2018 Engine #3 was dispatched to a working structure fire in Eastern Chalmette, upon arrival our crews were advised that someone was still inside the burning home. Captain Crotwell entered the structure behind the attack line and began searching for the resident. He located the victim who suffered from severe burns and pulled the man out of the structure so that Emergency Medical personnel could begin life-saving treatment. The patient was transported to the new Burn Unit at University Hospital. This is not the first time he has rescued people. In a 2009 Apartment Fire, he and another firefighter rescued a family of three from the second floor of the burning building. Also, not to forget, the professionalism he displayed during the many rescues the department performed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Eric is married to the former Courtney Appel and has 2 Daughters, Marissa and Mia. It is with great honor to present Captain Eric Crotwell to the Kiwanis Club as our “Life Saver of the Quarter.”
