In case you missed it – St. Bernard Parish Government participated in National Tourism Week.

Council member Wanda Alcon and parish employees participated in a luncheon hosted by Jefferson Parish CVB at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.  The luncheon was one of the many events held to promote National Travel and Tourism Week. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser spoke about the economic impact tourism has throughout the 64 parishes in the State of Louisiana.  Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser announced 2017 as the sixth consecutive year of record-breaking tourism numbers in Louisiana. The state welcomed a record 47.1 million visitors in 2017, representing an increase of nearly 500,000 from 2016.

Those visitors spent $17.5 billion, or an average of $371 per person. The travel and tourism industry generated $1.8 billion in state and local sales tax revenue, an increase of 4.5 percent in state and local sales tax revenue from the previous year. This revenue represents a 37-to-1 return on investment of state funding. Tax revenue generated through travel and tourism spending saves each household in Louisiana $1,047 a year in taxes.
