End of Summer Reading Season

Frank Levy, Week 5.

The St. Bernard Parish Library’s 2018 Libraries Rock Summer Reading Program is nearing the end of its playlist.  The dancers are slowly swaying to the last few notes of the reading song that has been at the top of the charts for the past six weeks.  Bringing our calendar of events to a close are the last two Summer with the Arts performances for this summer reading season.  On Friday, July 6th at 3 p.m. Stories in Motion’s Frank Levy will have everyone involved in the telling of two trickster tales.  Audience members will bring to life Brer Rabbit and Anansi the Spider and the Moss-Covered Rock, complete with costumes, props, and sound effects.  New Orleans’ own Samba Man, Curtis Pierre, will the bring the sounds and sights of a Brazilian Carnival to the library when he presents his highly interactive Samba and Brazilian Music show complete with festive stilt walkers.   Curtis will get the music started with lots of help from the audience on Saturday, July 7th at 11 a.m.  The last story craft program, ‘March to a Different Drum’ is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10th at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and for Wednesday, July 11th at 11 a.m.  Participants will create musical art that will be displayed through the end of summer.  All materials will be provided.

Summer reading would not be complete without a visit by the D.A.R.E. Deputies from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Darrin Miller and Lt. Lisa Jackson will be at the library on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. to share drug awareness information and safety tips with summer readers.  Parents are encouraged to bring their children to this free event.  It is an excellent opportunity for kids to meet some of our local law enforcement officers.

Readers are reminded to turn in their summer activity sheets by the July 12th deadline to be entered into the library’s prize drawings.  Late entries WILL NOT be accepted.  Pre-readers through 5th graders will receive a certificate of completion as well as a Happy Meal coupon from McDonald’s of St. Bernard when they redeem their activity sheets.  They will also be entered into the Grand Finale prize drawing set for Friday, July 13th at 3 pm.  Winners must be present at the prize drawing to win.  6th through 12th graders who complete their musical bingo games by the deadline will receive a magnetic bookmark along with McDonald’s coupons for a meal and dessert.  Their names will also be entered into the Teen and Tween prize drawing scheduled for Saturday, July 14th at 11:30 a.m.  6th-12 graders must be present at their prize drawing to claim their prizes.
