Darren M. Roy, an Assistant District Attorney with 24 years of service to the people of St. Bernard Parish and a reputation of being a tough but fair prosecutor, announced that he is a candidate in the November 6, 2018 election for Judge, Division “D”. Roy has the endorsement of District Attorney Perry Nicosia, Sheriff James Pohlmann, Parish President Guy McInnis, and Clerk of Court Randy Nunez.

Roy, a Chalmette resident who grew up in Arabi, has dedicated his entire quarter-century career helping to keep St. Bernard Parish a safe community. His extensive trial and appellate experience as a prosecutor, with the offices of both District Attorney Perry Nicosia and former District Attorney John F. “Jack” Rowley, has resulted in thousands of convictions. He has also handled drug asset forfeiture collections for the District Attorney’s Office.

Darren is the original prosecutor responsible for oversight of the innovative St. Bernard Drug Court Program for both adults and juveniles. “While my goal as a prosecutor is making our community safe by removing dangerous criminals from our streets, providing treatment for convicted defendants with addictions and working with them to avoid future convictions is also an important step in maintaining public safety and helping people get on with their lives.”

Prior to joining the District Attorney’s Office in 1994, Roy worked as a law clerk for Judge Robert J. Klees of the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal, performing legal research and helping to prepare judicial opinions. During law school, Darren worked as a law clerk for Orleans District Attorney Harry Connick, in both the trial and appellate divisions.

Besides being a seasoned prosecutor, Roy’s well-rounded experience extends to civil matters such as family law, business law, wills, and successions. “I am humbled by the reputation of being tough but fair. Above all, I’ve tried to treat everyone with justice, respect and dignity and I will continue this approach as a Judge serving the people of St. Bernard Parish.”

Having a lifelong desire to educate, Roy taught paralegal classes at night as an instructor at Nunez Community College for 7 years. Darren provided students with an overview of the law and covered such topics as criminal procedure, evidence and legal research.

A 1985 honors graduate of Holy Cross High School, Roy spent his grammar school days in Arabi. He worked his way through college at LSU, where he was a member of the Gamma Beta Phi honor/service society, and graduated with a BS in business in 1989. He earned his Law Degree from Loyola Law School in 1993.

Roy is currently serving as the Chairman of the St. Bernard Council on Aging, having been a board member and officer of the Council since 2016. Roy is also a graduate of the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership St. Bernard program. Roy is a former board member and officer of the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi and a former board member of the St. Bernard Chapter of the LSU Alumni Association. He is a member of the St. Bernard and Louisiana State Bar Associations and is licensed to practice before the federal Louisiana Eastern District Court and United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.

Roy’s commitment to serving the people of St. Bernard continues a long family tradition. Darren’s great-grandfather, William F. Roy, began publishing The St. Bernard Voice newspaper in 1890, a tradition continued by his grandfather, Edwin, and his father, Edwin “E.M.” Roy. Darren is the proud father of Adam F. Roy and the husband of Megan Suffern Roy, with whom he is expecting a child at the end of the year.

With his unmatched experience and time in the courtrooms of St. Bernard, Darren Roy is uniquely qualified to be the next judge of Division “D” for St. Bernard Parish. “I hope to meet as many of you as possible in the coming months and welcome the opportunity to share my goals as Judge with you. I humbly ask you for your vote on Nov. 6,” said Roy. You can contact Darren Roy with any questions or interest in supporting his campaign at darrenroy4judge@gmail.com.
