Nunez Community College opened its doors to the Pelican Pantry during a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 4, 2018. Participating in the grand opening were Dr. Tina Tinney – Nunez Chancellor, Dr. Kim Hunter-Reed – Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education, Kim Nunez – Community Supporter, Becky Maillet – Nunez Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Jacinta Massey – Nunez Counselor/ADA Coordinator.
The Pelican Pantry is available to all current students, faculty, and staff of the college. The pantry plays a vital role in helping fight hunger among the students and families the college serves in the community. In a 2017 study that surveyed 43,000 students, the Wisconsin Hope Lab found that 36 percent of university students and 42 percent of community college students were affected by food insecurity.
Anyone interested in donating to the Pelican Pantry can drop off unexpired non-perishable items to the Student Affairs office, located in the administration building of the college at 3710 Paris Road or by contacting Jacinta Massey at 504-278-6435.
