Meraux Foundation Welcomes Zeitgeist Theatre To St. Claude Arts Campus

The Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation welcomes the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center to the St. Claude Arts campus in St. Bernard Parish. The two block arts campus was assembled by the Meraux Foundation as a public interest project to accelerate the growth of the Old Arabi Cultural District. Zeitgeist will open in the former Valiant Theatre and Lounge at 6621 St. Claude Ave. in March.

“We are thrilled to welcome Zeitgeist to St. Claude Arts,” said Rita Gue, the president of the Meraux Foundation. “The theatre will enrich the Cultural District and attract more art lovers to the destination. We’ve seen how the arts campus has helped anchor the area, and new businesses continue to open nearby, such as the Canseco’s Market, Pirogue’s Whiskey Bayou, and Old Arabi Marketplace.”

Zeitgeist, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary in November, features programming ranging from alternative films and creative music to live performances and community events.

“It is with great pleasure and excitement that after all of these years we will be moving to a venue as world class as our programming,” said Zeitgeist founder Rene Broussard. “We will also be expanding our programming in the main theatre to include daily matinees, film series, classic repertory titles, along with much more live theatre and performances events. And in the lounge we will present “1001 Arabi Nights,” music, spoken word, comedy, and other nightly events.”

On the arts campus, Zeitgeist will be joining Studio Inferno and St. Claude Arts, a collection of studios and galleries.
