Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard/Arabi “Read to Ride” Summer Reading Program

Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you know, the more places you’ll go.” He probably would be pretty impressed with the way our local Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard-Arabi makes his thoughts come true with their Read to Ride program. Eleven summer readers who participated in the St. Bernard Parish Library’s annual summer reading program was able to choose brand new bicycles as a reward for their reading efforts during the six-week event thanks to the support of our local Kiwanis organization. Over 150 invited Pre-readers through 12th graders attended the Kiwanis Read to Ride Bicycle Prize Drawing at the library to celebrate the end of the 2019 “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program This year 640 children participated in the program, with 179 children completing the reading activities. The names of those completing the program were entered in the raffle, and the winners were allowed to choose their bikes. Kiwanis Club Read to Ride Coordinator, Mitch Perkins, worked with the Parish Library Children’s Services Manager, Janet Perez, to make this program a success. Numerous other businesses and individuals also donated prizes to the library program.

The Kiwanis Club president, Ellis Fortinberry said, “The Kiwanis Club is here to support and encourage all of the children of St. Bernard Parish through our programs. The Kiwanis Club also sponsors Read Around the World in all of our elementary schools, a Reading Incentive Program at W. Smith Elementary, and Ready for Reading for pre-schoolers Key Club at Chalmette High, Builders Clubs in our middle schools, and KKids in the elementary schools. In conjunction with Chalmette Refining PBF, Kiwanis also sponsors the well-known Terrific Kids and Terrific Teens programs.”

These are just a few of the many community service projects sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard- Arabi. Those interested in joining our service organization or sponsoring any of our programs, should visit us on Facebook at St. Bernard Kiwanis or call Robby Showalter at 504-616-7312, or join the club at its noon meeting every Tuesday at Rocky & Carlos.
