St. Bernard Parish Library Virtual 2020 “Lawyers AND Libraries”

St. Bernard Parish Library is pleased to announce that it is participating in the 2020 “Lawyers AND Libraries” VIRTUAL statewide program in partnership with the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA). In years past, the LSBA, the State Library of Louisiana, and the Louisiana Library Association have hosted “Lawyers in Libraries” events in libraries throughout the state during National Pro Bono Week. This year, given COVID-19, the annual program will celebrate its 7th year of service to the public by providing virtual services during the week of October 26th-31st. During this week, Louisiana attorneys will provide free, 15-20 minute “Ask-A-Lawyer” consultations by phone. Additionally, three webinars on timely legal issues will be broadcast on social media throughout the week.

Individuals interested in speaking with an attorney are asked to visit https://lil.ivolunteer.com/2020 to register. A valid e-mail address and working telephone number are required to sign up. Information regarding the upcoming legal webinars will be made available following registration. If needed, patrons can call the library at 504-279-0448 for assistance with the registration process.

Attorneys throughout Louisiana will be assisting area residents during this week-long event. Participants in the “Ask-A-Lawyer” event can receive free, limited legal services on a variety of non-criminal topics. Participants can have questions answered on subjects such as Bankruptcy, Civil Lawsuits, Collection Matters, Custody, Divorce, Evictions, FEMA/Disaster Benefits, Food Stamps, Foreclosures, Housing, Medicaid, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, Successions, Taxes, and Wills. Attorneys will contact participants at the number provided during registration.

“Lawyers in Libraries” has been a success because of the combined efforts of the LSBA, LSBA members, the State Library of Louisiana, LLA, Law Library of Louisiana, LSU Law Library, legal aid partners, local bar associations, and other community partners. We are confident that this year’s virtual “Lawyers AND Libraries” events will be equally as successful thanks to the many dedicated attorneys who will be providing much-needed assistance, especially in light of the increased need for legal guidance caused by the COVID-19 crisis and hurricane-related issues that are affecting so many residents. For more details or help finding an event in your area, contact your local library or visit www.LouisianaLawyersinLibraries.org.
