As the school year ends, the St. Bernard/Arabi Kiwanis Club celebrates the Literacy & Academics Programs in the parish schools. The Kiwanis Literacy and Academics Programs are dedicated to reading programs such as Read Around the World, Summer Read to Ride, School Book Fairs, Reading Incentive Program and other programs in their Ready for Reading fund. The St. Bernard/Arabi Kiwanis Club is a local community service organization of volunteers, sponsoring Scholarships other school programs like Terrific Kids and Terrific Teens along with Aktion Club, Key Club, Builders Clubs and K-Kids Clubs in the schools. The Kiwanis motto is, “ Kiwanis is dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.”
The Kiwanis Club sponsors the W. Smith Elementary Reading Incentive Program to provide incentives to help increase reading skills and reading enjoyment. This year, third through fifth-grade students who show significant growth in their STAR reading assessment and meet their reading goals for the month are rewarded with a pizza party and the chance to win a prize. Each month one student from each grade is drawn from the winners and receives an Amazon Fire 7 notepad.
