Hybrid Fun at the Library

Harvey Rabbit and Friends, and Page Turner Animal Adventures.

The animals are asking for you at the St. Bernard Parish Library as the first week of its annual summer reading program gets underway. Page Turner Animal Adventures kicked off the virtual part of the program with their original production, Mytrle Over the Moon on Tuesday, June 1st. Activities throughout the week include crafts, author/illustrator interviews, virtual field trips, sponsor surprise guest readers, performing artists, and more.

Thursday’s Sponsor Surprise will be read by Laura Breksa of Breksa Academy. A St. Bernard resident, Ms. Breksa is the author of a series of STEM/STEAM books created to inspire young readers through real-life concepts. She will narrate her book, Squishing, and Mooshing, as part of our Mash-Up Thursdays.

Harvey Rabbit and Friends will be our kick-off special guest with their video becoming available on Friday, June 4th. Summer readers young and old will want to make sure to ‘tune in’ to see Mr. Tim, Ms. Laura, Cecil, T-Boy, and of course, Harvey Rabbit.

Funding for the library’s virtual programming has been made possible by a generous donation from Arlette and Wayne Nunez, of St. Bernard, along with a matching gift from Shell Oil. Addition summer reading sponsors include Breksa Academy, Coffee House, Facials by Skin Diva, Infinity Science Center, Japan Society of New Orleans, Katt Forge, McDonald’s of St. Bernard, New Orleans Opera, Raising Cane’s, and the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department. The St. Bernard Parish Library is extremely grateful for all of the support and contributions this summer’s sponsors have given to its summer readers.

In-house programming is resuming with the library’s In & Out Story program at the library’s main branch located at 2600 Palmisano Blvd. Sessions are set for Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. As the event will be held indoors in a group setting, social distancing will be difficult. Participants are encouraged to wear masks as per state and CDC guidelines. Grab and Go crafts will be available following each week’s story program and will continue to be available while supplies last.

Activities won’t be watered down as the second week of summer reading gets launched on June 7th. Page Turner Animal Adventures will have viewers diving deep with their underwater antics all week long. Although summer readers won’t get to explore fire trucks and emergency vehicles this summer, St. Bernard Parish Fire Chief Tommy Stone didn’t want to disappoint his library fans. Chief Stone’s reading of his favorite fire truck book will be featured during Mash Up Thursday, June 10th. Budding young firefighters are going to want to watch Chief Stone’s reading over and over.

Closing out the week with our second artistic performance of the summer will be award-winning, Mike Anderson–“The Dulcimer Guy”. Library friends of all ages are going to thoroughly enjoy his tour of musical instruments as well as his storytelling.
