Robert Joseph Smith passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife Audrey Matthews Smith of 52 years. Loving father of Terri Jo Gray, Stacey Smith, Sheila Smith and the late Cecilia Smith. Son of the late Eugene and Ida Lebreton Smith. Brother of Gloriette Kiern, Claudette Gereighty, Paulette Smith and the late Eugene “Junior” Smith, Alquin Smith, Mabel Guidroz Flott and Valerie Smith Crowe. Proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, 2 late grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Robert was born on October 12, 1936 in New Orleans, LA and was a resident of St. Bernard Parish for over 50 years. He was the owner of Chalmette Motors in the 70’s and then pursued his career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. He retired as Captain after 35 years of dedicated service. Robert was a member of the Knights of Columbus Archbishop J. F. Rummel Council 5747. Robert was well loved and will be deeply missed by his family and those whose lives he touched.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
