Gerald “Red Dog” August Gettle, Sr. threw his last cast on Monday, May 29, 2017 at the age of 70. He was the loving husband of Ruth Morales Gettle. Son of the late Laverne Heckler Geary and the late Frederick Louis Gettle. Devoted father of Gerald August Gettle Jr. (Nicole), Michael Andre Gettle and Lori Marie Gettle. Proud grandfather of Elizabeth Gettle Daussin, Trey Luke Gettle, Ashley Elizabeth Gettle and Jackson August Gettle. Great grandfather of Zachary Mason Daussin. Brother of Fred Louis Gettle (Diane). Uncle of Christine Gettle, Raymond Rhodes, Earl Joseph “EJ” Rhodes, Jean Ann Perry, Steven Hupp and the late Jessica Hupp. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many relatives, cousins and dear friends.
Gerald proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 60, the Southern Bass Anglers, retiree of Exxon Mobil and the Pelican Café Breakfast Crew. He was well loved and will be deeply missed by his family and by all those whose lives he touched.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – noon. A celebration of his life, along with military honors, will take place in the funeral home chapel beginning at noon. His burial will be private.
