Heaphy takes over as Executive Director, St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District

Drew Heaphy is now at the helm of the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District after assuming his duties as the new Executive Director on July 1, 2017.

Heaphy, who began his tenure with the Port in 1999 as Director of Administration, has 23 years of experience in public administration and financial management. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Heaphy is a recipient of the American Association of Port Authorities Professional Port Management Certification, which educates and develops a professional’s knowledge in the intricacies of Port management.

“The Board of Commissioners of the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District believe Mr. Heaphy’s education and 18 years of Port experience makes him the perfect choice as its new Executive Director,” said Board of Commissioners President Henry Ballard Jr.

Heaphy succeeds Dr. Robert Scafidel who retired on June 30.

“Drew has proven himself in his 18 years at the Port, both under straightforward and difficult circumstances,” Scafidel said. “The Board is to be commended on their decision.”

The St. Bernard Port’s maritime facilities, which include Arabi, Chalmette and Violet Terminals/Industrial Parks, as well as Chalmette and Meraux Mid-Stream Mooring Facilities, move approximately 8 million short tons of cargo each year.

The Port’s ability to create direct and indirect jobs, along with the business it generates for the parish, provides 2,000 jobs and brings $325 million into the local economy. Currently, the Port and its 48 tenants housed throughout three terminals provide jobs for more than 800 employees.
