Vernon Ernest Alfonso, Sr.

Vernon Ernest Alfonso Sr. passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the age of 83. He was the beloved husband of 55 years to Janis Phelps Alfonso. Loving father of Vernon Alfonso Jr. (Mary Anne) and Lori Arcement (Tracy).  Proud grandfather of Brandi Alfonso, Colby Arcement, Amber Arcement and Dylan Alfonso. Great grandfather of Laila Villanueva. Son of the late Martin and Cecile Perez Alfonso.  Brother of Jerry Alfonso, Jesse Alfonso, Stanley Alfonso and the late Nathan Alfonso.  He is also survived and fondly remembered by countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom he loved so dearly.

Vernon was a lifelong commercial fisherman from Delacroix Island. He had an extra special bond with his deckhand Hilton Koch with whom he lived and worked with for many years.  He will be remembered for his loyalty and dedication to his family, friends and community, his loving spirit, his laughter, and spoiling the grandchildren. He was a wonderful example of what it means to treasure your family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, followed by a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2621 Colonial Blvd, Violet, LA beginning at 1:00 p.m.  He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery. Following services, family and friends are invited to attend a reception in Vernon’s memory at the Islenos Hall, 1345 Bayou Rd., St. Bernard LA to reminisce, grieve, support each other and, of course, just chat.
