St. Bernard Business and Professional Women’s Club selects Man and Woman of the Year for 2017

St. Bernard Business and Professional Women’s Club will hold its annual gala on October 18, 2017 as the parish celebrates National Business Women’s Week October 16 – 20. The evening gala which includes dinner will be held at the Sigur Civic Center’s North Ballroom 8425 W. Judge Perez Drive, Chalmette, LA The honorees were nominated and chosen by BPW members.

Since 1928 National Business Women’s Week has honored the contributions of working women. For more information about tickets contact Lena Nunez at (504) 491-5266. Seating is limited and tickets will be on sale through October 14th. The gala begins with a cash bar from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by dinner and awards program.

The 2017 Business & Professional Women “Man of the Year” is Frederick J Sigur, Jr. He is a well know civic leader in St. Bernard Parish. A resident of St.Bernard Parish since 1951. A graduate of Holy Cross High School and Southeastern University. He unselfishly serves numerous organizations in many ways, from committee member to Chairman of the board.

Some of these organizations are:

  • Board of Directors of The St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce, 2007 to current, Fred was honored by his peers when recognized by the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce as the St. Bernard Chamber’s member of the year in 2012 and served as Vice Chairman in 2013 and Chairman of the Chamber in 2014
  • St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation Director 2007 to current serves on the Executive Committee
  • Serves on Our Lady Prompt Succor School Board since 2008 and currently serves as the board Chairman, and a member of the Our Lady Prompt Succor Church finance committee
  • Serve on St. Bernard Parish Personnel Review Board
  • Archbishop Hannan Community Appeal/Catholic Charities Fundraising Volunteer since 1998
  • Member of St. Bernard/Arabi Kiwanis Club

During the post Katrina recovery he was instrumental in welcoming businesses back to St. Bernard. He would say “We had businesses looking for people, and people looking for businesses. The population didn’t want to come back without those conveniences and the businesses were afraid to return without the customer.”

Fred Sigur joined the family business of Real Estate in 1966 and is the current president the Real Estate enterprise that is known for subdivision development, commercial and residential rentals and leasing. Managing and owning numerous commercial & residential properties throughout St. Bernard Parish.

He is a proud father of two daughters, Rachel Sigur and Danielle Sigur Sparacio, Father-in-law of David Sparacio and his 4 grandchildren, Dakota, Denver, Drew and Delaney Sparacio.

Fred is a resident of Old Arabi. And you will see him driving the area in his pick-up truck and always wearing his Signature cowboy hat.

Wanda A. Alcon is a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish. She is married to Clyde and they are the parents of 3 sons, Chip, Craig and Jonathan and grandparents of 5, Dominic, Kirksey, Krieger, Cooper and Brody. She graduated from St. Bernard High School and attended Southwestern University.She is a retired Judicial Administrative Assistant having worked at the 34th JDC and the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal.

Ms. Alcon has always been active in St. Bernard. She is a member and past president of BPW, and has served as Chairman of National Business Women’s Week, She serves on the board of the St. Bernard Autism Awareness Krewe, and Blues, Brews and Bar-b-Que Committee, and Los Islenos Society She served as Chairman of the St. Bernard Tourist Commission, St. Mark School Board and Parent Club.

Ms. Alcon is presently the Council Member representing the residents of District D, where she serves on the Cable Access Committee, Home Mortgage Authority Committee, Community Development Block Grant Program Committee, and she represents the Council on the Economic Development Foundation Board.

She was recently named as the 2017 Legislator of the Year for St. Bernard Parish by the Alliance for Good Government. She also received the BPW Louise B. Gorbaty Golden Circle Award.
