St. Bernard Parish Fire Civil Service Is Accepting Applications For The Classification Of Firefighter

The Deadline To Apply is Wednesday, October 24th at 4:30 p.m.

A written examination will be given in approximately ninety (90) days, on a competitive basis to approved applicants for the purpose of placing names on the competitive employment list in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Law and the rules of the St. Bernard Fire Protection District #1-2 Civil Service Board.

Applications may be obtained from FCS Competitive Application or from Lenor Duplessis, Board Secretary, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex, 8201 West Judge Perez Drive, Second Floor, Chalmette, LA 70043.

Completed applications must be received by the above-mentioned person at the address listed no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Approved applicants will be notified of the exact date, time and place of the examination at least five days prior to the examination date.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO EXAMINATION

  • Unless otherwise specified, all requirements listed below must be met by the filing deadline for admission to the test.
  • Must meet all requirements of the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Law, including being a citizen of the United States, and of legal age. (www.ose.louisiana.gov)
  • Must submit a completed application to the St. Bernard Fire Civil Service Board secretary before the deadline of 4:30 p.m. on October 24, 2018.
  • Must be not less than eighteen (18) nor more than thirty-five (35) years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Applicant must possess one of the following: high school diploma, high school equivalency certificate, high school transcript, an affidavit from the issuing high school, associate’s or bachelor’s degree, or college transcript, any one of which must indicate that graduation has occurred or a degree awarded. Any Louisiana applicant who presents a home study diploma shall submit necessary documentation indicating the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) approval of the home study curriculum. Non-Louisiana applicants shall be required to present proof of completion of a high school curriculum which has been accredited by the applicant’s state or its state-approved agency. A certification of completion shall not be sufficient to substitute for a diploma or equivalency certificate.

After an offer of employment, but before beginning work in this class, must pass a physical examination, the selection, and administration of which shall be authorized by the Appointing Authority, designed to demonstrate good health and physical fitness sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position, with or without accommodation.

Must have the following certifications prior to completion of the working test period:

  • Firefighter II
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • Hazardous Materials Operations

Must have and maintain certification and be nationally registered as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher prior to completion of working test period.

APPLICANT MUST ATTACH A COPY OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS TO THE APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADMISSION TO THIS EXAMINATION

  • Proof of United States Citizenship (birth certificate if born in the United States, Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization or U.S. Passport).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma or equivalency certificate
