St. Bernard to hold World War I Centennial Event

Event to Honor St. Bernard Veterans and mark the 100th Anniversary of the ‘The Great War’

St. Bernard Parish Government and the Daughters of British Empire in Louisiana are hosting an event at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the conclusion of the First World War on Saturday, November 10th. They will honor the five St. Bernard Parish residents who died in what was then called “The Great War”.

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. in front of what was originally dedicated as the World War I monument in the center of the cemetery. A reception will follow the commemoration at the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Iverson Hall across the street. Parking will be available at the St. Bernard Catholic Church, located at 2805 Bayou Road in St. Bernard. There will also be a courtesy shuttle departing the Chalmette High School Ninth Grade Academy at 9:00 a.m. and returning at the end of the reception. The ceremony will be one of two military-themed events taking place in St. Bernard on Veterans’ Day weekend. On Sunday, November 11th St. Bernard Parish Government will hold its annual Veterans Day parade and recognition ceremony in Chalmette.
