The Judge for the SBAG 2017 Open Show will be Maurice Alvarado, owner of Studio 520 in Uptown New Orleans, who studied at Tulane University and Corning Glass in New York. Alvarado studied under Italian Glass Master Pino Signoretto and many others. His skills lie in exquisite execution of 10” to 24” tall glass figures, which are hand tooled glass. These can take as long as three hours to create at temperatures of 1000 to 2000 degrees. He has annual shows in Chicago, Cincinnati, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans where his work is in great demand. His work is also part of the New Orleans Museum of Art. Maurice’s glass sculptures are elegant, meticulously crafted and evoke a sense of the spiritual. Although idealized versions of the human torso, his sculptures clearly embody a spiritual presence. His goal is “to capture, in clear and multi-colored glass the essence of the human and angelic figures, inspired by the dreams I’ve had and emotional impressions I have of people and events in my life”.
